Driving around Kinkaku-ji in Forza Horizon 6 feels completely different from racing through the wide highways or open mountain roads in other parts of the map. The area around the famous golden temple is packed with narrow gravel paths, tight forest roads, stone-lined corners, and hidden off-road trails. Because of that, the best cars here are not necessarily the fastest cars in the game. What matters more is control, acceleration, and how stable the car feels on mixed terrain.

After spending a lot of time exploring the Ohtani region, these are the cars that felt the most enjoyable and practical to drive around Kinkaku-ji.

Best Cars for the Kinkaku-ji Trails
2015 Subaru WRX STI

The 2015 Subaru WRX STI is probably the safest overall choice for this area. The all-wheel-drive system makes it extremely reliable on gravel and dirt, especially during the Kinkaku-ji Trail Dirt Race.

The roads around the temple can get surprisingly tight, and there are several sections where one bad slide sends you into stone walls or trees. The WRX STI handles those transitions smoothly. It is fast enough to stay competitive in races, but stable enough for casual exploration too.

Another reason this car works so well here is visibility and responsiveness. On the narrow downhill forest sections near the lake, you can quickly correct mistakes without losing momentum.

If you only want to keep one dedicated Kinkaku-ji car in your garage, this is probably the best all-around option.

2005 Honda NSX-R GT

The 2005 Honda NSX-R GT became one of my favorite cars in the region after unlocking the nearby Barn Find. Around Kinkaku-ji, the car feels incredibly sharp and precise, especially once upgraded for AWD handling.

This is not the easiest car for beginners, but experienced players will probably love how quickly it rotates through corners. The paved backroads surrounding the temple suit the NSX-R GT perfectly.

The car is especially fun during free roam because the entire Ohtani area has lots of elevation changes and hidden side roads. The NSX-R GT feels fast without becoming difficult to control.

It is also one of the best choices for photography drives around the lake because the car looks great parked near the golden pavilion at sunset.

1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16

The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 feels almost built specifically for the small roads around Kinkaku-ji. Its compact size makes it much easier to squeeze through the tighter routes leading into the temple gardens and wooded paths.

What surprised me most about this car was how agile it feels on uneven terrain. Some of the dirt shortcuts around the lake are rough and narrow, but the Peugeot changes direction instantly without feeling unstable.

For players who enjoy retro rally cars, this is easily one of the most entertaining options in the game. It is not the highest top-speed machine, but around Kinkaku-ji that honestly does not matter much.

The short wheelbase also helps when hunting collectibles or exploring hidden trails in the forest.

Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR Forza Edition

Most people would not immediately think about using a Viper near Kinkaku-ji, but the Forza Edition version actually works surprisingly well once tuned for dirt.

This car is useful if you are focusing more on exploration than technical racing. The surrounding region has several rough off-road sections, collectible routes, and hidden treasure areas where raw power helps.

The Viper can blast through brush, dirt, and uneven ground much faster than smaller rally cars. It also makes treasure chest hunting less frustrating because you can simply power through obstacles instead of carefully maneuvering around them.

That said, it definitely requires more control than the Subaru or Peugeot. On the narrow temple roads, it can feel heavy if you enter corners too aggressively.

Best Driving Spots Around Kinkaku-ji

One of the reasons this area stands out in Forza Horizon 6 is how varied the nearby roads are. You can switch from scenic cruising to technical rally driving within a few minutes.

The Lake Path

Behind the temple there is a winding dirt route that circles the water. This is probably the best place to test rally-focused builds.

Cars like the Subaru WRX STI and Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 feel excellent here because the corners come quickly and the surface constantly changes between packed dirt and loose gravel.

It is also a common route for treasure hunting and seasonal objectives.

Temple Photography Area

The lakeside parking area facing the golden pavilion is one of the best photo locations in the game.

The Honda NSX-R GT looks especially good here because the reflective paint and low profile match the scenery perfectly. During sunset or rainy weather, the reflections around the temple create some of the best screenshots on the map.

Even if you are not focused on photography challenges, it is worth stopping here for a few minutes.

The Deep Forest Trails

Southwest of the temple gates, the terrain becomes much rougher. There are hidden paths, dense trees, and several routes that feel designed specifically for rally exploration.

This is where AWD cars really shine. The Subaru remains the easiest car to control in these woods, while the Viper becomes useful if you want to quickly clear rough terrain while searching for collectibles or Barn Find rumor areas.
